Applications of Garnet Sand

In the process of surface preparation , garnet abrasive is blasted onto the surface of the steel using compressed air to create a profile prior to application of protecting coatings to protect steel substrates from rusting and corrosion . Garnet is a prescribed abrasive for surface preparation of steel substrates in oil refineries , offshore platforms , petrochemical tanks , pipelines , shipbuilding , heavy equipment repair and industrial parts cleaning .

A popular cutting technology  to cut metals precisely and accurately widely adopted in USA and Europe. The advantages of water jet cutting are, high productivity , no thermal impact on the material being cut and lower cost. Garnet abrasive used in cutting of diverse materials like marble , granite , concrete , aluminium ,  high strength steel , automotive glass , corrugated box board, plastic laminates ,aerospace composites, etc.

Advantages

Stable silicate mineral , non-hygroscopic , chemically inert and not susceptible to acid
High specific gravity enhances performance in abrasive blasting and water jet cutting applications
high hardness and low particle breakdown produces less dust during abrasive blasting and water jet cutting applications
Recyclability – reusing garnet abrasive several times ensures less consumption translating to cost savings in surface preparation and water jet cutting applications
Low free silica content (< 1%) in garnet product conforming to SSPC standards makes it very safe to operators from any threat of silicosis during blasting and cutting operation
The sub-angular grain coupled with particle size distribution in specific grades provides premium performance products for abrasive blasting and water jet applications
Garnet product is fresh water washed resulting in very low Chloride content (< 25 ppm ) . Low salinity in garnet product used in surface preparation obviates coating failure due to rust formation.
